Stephen Colbert and The Colbert ReportSir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. is the coolest person in the world. (Stephen Colbert is pretty cool, too.) I've had the idea to write a post about him since I started this blog. What finally prompted me to actually do it was last night's episode. The intro word was "Heterosapien" and he urged the Colbert Nation to change their Facebook status to "Gobsmacked". This seemed to be a sign from the gods to get it done - okay, I figured it was a good opportunity to appear in Google search results and advertise this post on Facebook.
I think I started watching The Colbert Report when it started on October 17, 2005. Colbert was obviously a great comedian as a correspondent on The Daily Show, especially on the recurring segment, "This Week in God". What sealed his coolness and established his importance as a cultural commentator was his performance at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Standing a few feet from Bush43 in front of hundreds of media stars, he satirized the president and the media. It was truly awesome. I've been a huge fan ever since.
The greatest part about The Colbert Report is the reality-imitating-art-imitating-reality phenomena. The Colbert Nation isn't just some gimmick - it's tens of thousands of fans actively participating in and creating bits on the show. To provide just one example, I bought two WRISTSTRONG bracelets after Colbert broke his wrist while running around on his set before a show. I wore one until they broke, about 3 years in total. There are hundreds of other examples.
The latest meme is a fan-created campaign to goad Colbert into hosting a
Restore Truthinessrally on the Washington Mall in D.C. to show up Glenn Beck and the Freedom Works' 9/12 events. There is a Reddit group, a Facebook group, and colbertrally.com organizing support. These groups are all promoting a fundraising campaign on Donorschoose.org, a favorite Colbert charity. All this happened in the last two weeks. Simply incredible.
So here's a Shout Out - Hey! - to Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A.
I DID IT!
Norwegian Shooter received its 1,000th visitor since I started tracking on July 24, 2010. Well, I shouldn't be so proud. The 1,000th was very typical of a plurality of my visits. It came from a web search that pulled up the photo on my post Mexican Standoffs - Tarantino Style. It lasted not even 1 second. This must be because it only hits the site to pull up the picture in Google Image Search. Oh well.
A hilarious clip from Tuesday's TCR and a screen shot of the visit info (click to embiggen) after the jump.
